On doctor's orders I ride my bike for at least 4 hours per day. Even if I take the same route on occasion I am exposed to loose dogs. Consequently I have begun building a KML map of dog incidents reported to me via email to angrydog@verizon.net with the following information:
Send mapping data where an angry dog, bad dog has been seen or lives or where a dog attack, dog bite etc. has occurred.
Send an email to angrydog@verizon.net with as much of the following information as possible:
Animal description:
Breed
Size
Color
Age
Gender
Location:
Street number
Street name
Street type
Town
State
Zip
Time:
HH:MM AM or PM
Date:
DD/MM/YYYY
Incident description:
Tell what happened.
Sufficient information can be added to a Google Earth KML or KMZ file and the file returned to the sending email address and opened with Google Earth for viewing all locations where an angry dog, bad dog, dog attack, dog bite etc. has happened.
My question is whether there is a way to eliminate the need for participants to send an email to me but instead update a public KML file themselves with this information, since my only experience so far with KML is dragging a few place markers in Google Earth to various locations I have decided to mark?
Thanks |

Nice applications! I am a bike racer and so spend a lot of time in the saddle. Anyway, I cannot answer your question but I would guess that the application would work best if anyone could post the location where dogs are loose and chase runners and/or cyclists. This is how many of the social apps work with GE and VE.

My local Animal Services, possibly due the history of the need for dogs to control varmints including raccoons and panthers have been very sympathetic in the past with owners allowing dogs to run loose. Currently it is now against the law to even walk your dog in pubic under voice control versus having a fail-safe leash.
Unfortunately, dogs still get loose and kill smaller animals they encounter in residential areas where bikers such as ourselves must deal with the added risk of being on a bike in light clothing. BTW- Animal Services recommended I carry a small (24") metal T-Ball bat and to use it as a bite bait by keeping the blunt end in front of the dog's mouth. Knowing what and where a potential problem might be is the justification, however, for having geographical information. |

My reply was not displayed or recorded and I did not make a copy...
Here is the gist of it: You can carry a short metal T-Bat and use it not to strike an attacking dog but to keep the blunt end in front of the dog's mouth as "bite bate." I've held off a charging and circling dog with this method for 10 minutes before it finally got the message, gave up and ran off. |

Have you used Google Maps' MyMaps feature? It allows you to create your own custom map of points, lines, and/or polygons. You can see it in Google Maps, but you can also make a simple URL request to get your map as KML. Finally, you can also allow your map to be editable by all (click on the "Collaborate" button).
Here's the documentation:

Good luck and let us know how it turns out. _________________ Raj Singh
